Malone Revitalization was formed in 1997, as an ad hoc committee requested by the Malone
Village board. Its purpose is to work on revitalization issues that the Village government lacks
the time to do.
Shortly after its formation, MRF secured a grant to create a focus for future revitalization
efforts. The Mullins’ Group was employed to facilitate this activity. Mullins, with enthusiastic
input from Malone area residents, helped us to identify specific areas of opportunity for
improving our community.
The two most evident opportunities identified were the Salmon River and Shared Services
between the town and village. Main Street and Neighborhood Revitalization were also
selected as areas that would benefit from renewal efforts.
The Salmon River forms the backbone of Malone. It was envisioned that the river corridor
could be a wonderful resource for recreation and a tourist attraction. Proper planning for the
use of this corridor would help to create economic development, educational experiences,
and a variety of pleasurable activities for people of all ages.
To properly realize the opportunities afforded by the river, MRF secured a grant from the
Department of State to create a Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan. The task of creating the
plan was given to the Salmon River Committee of the MRF. This increasingly enthusiastic
group sought proposals from qualified planning agencies, interviewed the respondents, and
hired the LA Group to help create the plan. A smaller 5 person steering committee met with
the LA Group over a several month period to organize the process. The end result will be a
comprehensive plan for land use management and recreational, historical, and economic
development along the approved boundaries surrounding the Salmon
River as it passes through the Village and Town of Malone. It will be complete by early 2007.
In order to generate local enthusiasm for the River and its promise, the Salmon River
committee held events on and around the river throughout 2006, designated “The Year of

the River”. This committee, spearheaded by the ambitious organizers including Bev Quenville,
Nancy Child, Lucille Bowen, Sandy Macomber, Anne Ray, Ken and Karen Carre, and John
Militech have held the Hendrick Hatch Fly Fishing Tournament, the Black Tie, Black Fly
Soiree, and Riverfest. All of these
events were very well attended and appreciated by those in attendance. Some have become
annual events and draw tourists to our town, as well as provide wonderful experiences for our
residents, and increase awareness of the beauty and bounty of the Great Salmon River.
